EVERQUEST

The Original Game

Achievements & Everything Else!

Been there, done that, got the achievement! -- Bonzz

EverQuest is the original game, released March 16, 1999, and it would change gaming and MMORPG forever.

Scuttlebutt is that this original version of the game sold for $9.89 (in homage to 989 Studios), the original EverQuest company / developer.

It was a big game environment right off the bat, with three (3) continents (Antonica, Odus & Faydwer), as well as three (3) 'Outer Planes' (Plane of Fear, Plane of Hate & Plane of Sky) and 50 Character Levels.

COIN TYPES

The original coin of the realm was Copper, Silver, Gold and Platinum. There was no alternative currency.

Originally, these four (4) coin types were actual items and had weight (you could drop them on the ground or put them in a bag). It was not unusual to see Players dump a pile of copper so they would not be as encumbered (weighed down). Being encumbered was a real problem back then, as it would not only significantly slow your movement rate, it could actually keep you from moving at all. It could also kill you, as all that weight would add to the damage you took when 'falling,' even with the smallest of drops (such as when running down the side of a hill)!

10 Copper = 1 Silver; 10 Silver = 1 Gold; 10 Gold = 1 Platinum; 200,000 Platinum = 1 Noble (added to the game later as an Alternative Currency purchased at Parcel Vendors).

However, specialty coin has since been added to the game and, in the Alternate Currency tab of your Inventory Window. Some of it is incorrectly 'credited' to the original game as it was added via later expansions:

.

SPELLS, SONGS & DISCIPLINES

Rank One Discipline, Songs & Spells can be dropped as loot and / or sold by spell vendors. However, in modern day, you can find all of the Level 1 to Level 50 Spells, Songs and Disciplines sold by vendors up in the Plane of Knowledge up in the Library.

There were no Rank II or Rank III Spells, Songs or Disciplines.

.

PROGRESSIVE ITEMS

The progressively better versions of the Qeynos Badge of Nobility were awarded via a quest series  (see here).

.

EXPANSION VISIBLE ARMOR SETS

This was before expansion related 'Tier' Group and Raid Armor sets. Other than the mismatched / variant gear (dropped, crafted, vendor sold or quested), this expansion did include a number of full 'visible' (matched) Armor sets (helm, chest, arms, legs, hands, wrists & gloves).

There are other 'sets,' but they did not seem to include an item for every visible slot. Not all classes were in the game yet, but some of this gear was modified (or added) after the fact, to include those future classes. Some gear is also race restricted... and there were a lot of them!

Did I miss any? Let me know!

NOSTALGIA

In original game play, you were essentially born naked and had to acquire armor, food, drink and so forth. Even Copper was hard to come by. Heck, 1 Platinum was considered  a fair amount of money. It was not unusual for Players to have missing gear even as they moved up in Levels.

Players had to recover their corpses and seek a rez. Back then, you lost experience even at Level 1 and you did not respawn with your gear. If you did not recover your corpse, and it rotted, you lost everything you had!

When medding, your spell book filled the entire EverQuest window (you could not see approaching MoB's, etc.).

Players would kill trash MoB's near city gates, so they could run to the Guards if they got in trouble (the Guards would kill the trash MoB's when they approached the gates, saving the Players from being killed by the trash MoB's).

Certain skills were not entitled to Players (i.e. Swimming, Sense Heading). There were no in-game Maps, no 'Find' and so forth. Players used alternative methods to orient themselves and find their way about... such as the /loc system; that dropped Swords always pointed in a certain direction; that clouds tended to flow in a certain direction; they had to skill up Sense Heading; they used spells like True North; and they also used paper / printed maps from the internet to help find their way to places within a zone... or to get to one zone to another.

.

LORE

Lore is from / based on Daybreak, Expansion release information and / or Dev / Beta Forum Info.

Originally, there was nothing but a void. The Nameless, who has yet to be seen in EverQuest, stumbled upon a pocket of space where there was a flow of time. Upon entering this pocket of space, the ensuing chaos resulted in the creation of planets and stars, to include Norrath. The Nameless then created the 'Gods of Power' using four equal portions of the 'stuff of existence.' These Gods, or Deities, divided the universe into form. The Rathe brought order to the chaos. Fennin Ro shaped the chaos. The Triumvirate of Water provided the life giving touch. Xegony provided the cushion of air as protection from the cosmos. This new existence, however, was not capable of containing The Nameless, so The Nameless called for the 'Gods of Power' to create minions that could share in the experiences of this new world (Norrath). Thus, the world of Norrath was created and populated with creatures of many kinds.
Norrath has two moons, Drinal & Luclin, but only one of them is visible (Drinal) from Norrath. The Norrath is the second planet from the sun, which is named Solus (later shortened to Sol). The first planet is Trorsmang. Beyond Norrath are also the planets Anbeal & Cordan.
As outlined in the book, 'Immortals:' 'The immortals who can be spoken of are not the eternal
immortals. Their spoken names are not their eternal names. In namelessness they are the beginning of heaven and earth. Named they are one with the\ ten thousand things. Though different in title they spring from one source and appear as darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gate to their mystery. The immortals do not go forth All comes to them. They are like the ocean, the king of ten thousand streams. By staying beneath they are a receptacle for all things. They do nothing. Yet are masters of the universe.  Trorsmang! Be our course of action. Anbeal! Become the vessel to hold our virtue. Drinal! Be our stability, where we can take root. Cordan! Fill our vessel and calm our ambitions. Norrath! Take our husks and breathe life into them. We beseech you! Guide us in your humility.

OCTOBER 13, 1999

A new zone, The Temple of Solusek Ro, is now available via the optional patch.

FEBRUARY 17, 2000

The City of Paineel, home to the infamous Heretics of Erudin, is now available via the Optional Patch. In addition, Erudites may now also be Shadowknights in addition to the other classes available to them. All Erudite Necromancers, Shadowknights, and Clerics who worship the God of Fear, Cazic-Thule, now start in the City of Paineel. As such, if you wish to create a character of this type from this point forward, you *must* download the Paineel zone-files via the Optional Patch.

APRIL 10, 2000

Kerra Ridge has been completely revamped. The target level-range for the zone has been slightly increased. In addition, many new quests have been added to the zone. The faction for Kerrans has been changed so that those who killed them indiscriminately before today's update can take part. Be warned that the Kerrans still do not like everyone.

RAID INFO & STRATEGY

The generic strats / info below are from successful raids that I was part of, from research and / or from what I recall. The below info should be adapted, as seen fit, by your Raid Leader. Key emotes may also be noted below. Raid make-up (classes, levels, Player skill levels, etc.) can and do make a difference on raid strategy options and winning or losing. In any situation, Players fulfilling their roles, using assist, and following emotes is always essential. There is always more than one variant strategy that can successfully defeat a raid. As Levels increase, defeating old raids can prove much easier and more forgiving (even as a group or solo / molo, depending on how old the raid event is). However, sometimes, certain mechanics still have to be honored. It has been known that in some events, due raid mechanics, too much DPS; killing MoB X before MOB Y; and similar, can bug the raid and cause it to fail. The below info does not include details on how to complete raid-related achievements. Those are noted elsewhere on this page, if any. Some of these targets may require 'zerging' into the zone get to them (killing stuff along the way). They may also have 'adds' which are often more like trash MoB's that in the general area. The original / older targets / encounters were pre-raid window events. Raids were more of a collective effort, or better, an extremely challenging group event. Any effects noted below  often 'scale to level,' so the effects can be lesser or greater than stated, depending on raid force levels. On Progression servers, targets can use 'Mitigation of the Mighty' (mitigates Spell Damage, Melee Damage and absorbs DoT damage), at least until such time as certain later expansions (typically, expansions that are at least seven-plus expansions after the expansion of the related target). While older targets are static open world (non-instance) events, there are now an Agent of Change in various locations that will provide instanced version of the same event (which are noted below, if any).

Do not forget that many of the old world dragon are 'belly casters,' meaning you need to basically be under them to land spells. Some of these targets were 'beefed' up in 2008 as "Fabled" targets, with enhanced loot drops They can still be found during the Legacy Anniversary events.

If I missed anything or got something wrong, let me know!

Phinigel Autropos is in an all underwater zone, so you need 'Enduring Breath' of some kind. The hardest part of this raid is getting there!

Here is how to get there: After zoning in: (1) Swim on into the first room; (2) Swim down; (3) Face South and open the grate you see; (4) Swim through the grate into the first room and then swim down; (5) Swim south in the next room and swim down to bottom; (6) Go through the door on to the East; (6) Go straight past the shark(s) to a find another grate; (7) Open the grate, swim in and follow a long tunnel up to find an area where all four walls have a grate; (8) Open any of the grate and swim in (doesn't matter which); Look around and you will see another grate, which is actually a double grate (one grate behind another grate)... open them both and swim in; (9) In the next room you will notice some stone blocks or planters; click the one on the right and a secret passage will be revealed; (10) Swim in to find the cavern where Phinigel Autropos spawns.

Phinigel Autropos can dispel (four buffs at a time). There are a number of Seahorse & Piranha trash adds in the area. With some finesse, you can pull and kill the trash adds first.
