EQ SLANG-A-PEDIA-SAURUS

>> N to Z <<

The EverQuest Dictionary, Compendium, Encyclopedia & Repository of Words, Terms, Lore, Phrases, 'Secrets' & Other Tidbits.

What did they mean... what did they say? If you know the slang, it can save the day! -- Bonzz

This page was originally started to define EQ Slag... terms and phrases you may hear while playing EverQuest. However, in defining those meanings, this page quickly expanded into much more than that... out of necessity! Lore, How To, Secrets, Commands, Tactics, and on and on! In short, it has evolved from a Dictionary, to a Compendium and essentially, an EQ Encyclopedia. It's a "Slang-A-Pedia-Saurus!"

NOTE: BY IT'S VERY NATURE... THIS PAGE IS CONSTANTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION & REVISION!

>> The best way to use / search this page is to use the Keyboard Command Cntrl-F and then type in a keyword. <<

As with most games... or professions... or groups... EverQuest (EQ) has it's own unique phrasing, terminology and slang.

Much of it can be, and often is, borrowed or adapted from non-EQ sources, but some of it is 100% EQ. Some of it may also have multiple meanings, depending on the context in which it is used. Additionally, you may find that on different servers, there may a variation in preferred terminologies!

Do you know of any I should add? Did I miss any? Did I get any out of proper alphabetical order? Any suggestions on a topic to add? If you note any errors, misspellings, item name errors, misinformation or anything that needs addressing on this page -- PLEASE let me know via an in-game EQ Message (Bonzz on the Bertoxxulous server), or post on Bonzz's Discord Server!

This is not a practice that is approved by EverQuest / Daybreak and can result in punitive actions (see Cheating).

PLAT RAID - This is reference to a pick-up raid where members of the raid bid on loot drops using Platinum. The highest bidder for each item wins, give the Platinum to the Raid Leader and then gets the item awarded to them. At the end of the loot process, the Platinum is distributed among those who actually participated in the event (the actual raid / battle). Other Players, who are outside of the raid (not in the zone / DZ) can also bid... if they win, they are added to the DZ, temporarily, to go get the loot. The Raid Leader takes a percentage of the Platinum for leading the event (normally 3% to 5%).

They can be converted to other common coin types (1 Platinum = 10 Gold; 100 Silver; or 1,000 Copper) via Banker NPC's. The most you can have at any given time is 1 Billion. . You can also buy a Bag of Platinum (that will grant about 12,000 to 18,000 Platinum, when clicked) from "Pagus Nonad" in Sunrise Hills, or with "Alerynril the Loyal" in the Plane of Knowledge.

Also, not every player Race can choose from every Player Class.

PLAYER STUDIO - This was a program where Players could design items (augmentations, robe ornaments...). POWER SOURCE - This term, two words, not one, is a reference to items you can place into your Character's Power Source Gear Slot. Such items will then "power," or enhance any other Gear you have equipped that has an Slot 14 "Energeiac" Augment Slot. Power Sources are like a battery, in that they power your Energeiac Gear. Just like a Battery, they can run out of power after a time, and need to be replaced. If you go to a Guildmaster for your class, they will offer you to "teach" you (+1 Skill Level at a time), via a "Training Window" in any you can see in your Character Skill Window (right click the NPC). These days, such training is generally irrelevant (and has been since about the PoP expansion). Further, once you reach certain skill level ("Master") in any given skill, you will equal or exceed the Guildmaster, meaning they no longer have anything to teach you (you will have equaled or exceeded the Teacher, so to speak).

RAID BUFFED - (Raid Buff) This is a reference to being fully buffed, as if from being in a raid. Normally, during a Raid, a Player has a lot of other classes that can Buff them, versus when they are Solo or in a Group, and thus the term. These days, it mostly refers to being Rank III buffed. However, with the advent of all Group Buffs now being default Rank III buffs, and with the proliferation of Players who hang out in Plane of Knowledge or the Guild Lobby just so they can get buffed while AFK, this term is fast becoming obsolete.

RAID CURRENCY - See Alternative Currency.

RAID LEADER - This is the Player who is in charge of a Raid... or more specifically, the Person who controls the Raid Window and it's functions.

RAMP - See Rampage.

RAMPAGE - (Ramp) Rampage is a special attack by MOB's, where they can attack someone (the next person on the aggro list) in addition to the MT. This is why you may hear an "RT" (Ramp Tank) often designated. The RT will work to keep themselves 2nd on the aggro list, so that such attacks fall on the RT, to prevent such attacks from going to a character far less capable of taking the blows (re: a healer, a caster....). It is a subject of debate if Rampage will hit only one Player. However, it does seem sometimes that Rampage is more like an an AoE. However, this could potentially be due the changing of places on the aggro list. In any case, the best way try and avoid being a Rampage target is to watch aggro, fight at max melee or be out of melee range all together.

RAMP TANK - See Rampage Tank.

RAMPAGE TANK - (RT, Ramp Tank) A Rampage Tank is a Character, a tank type preferred, that is second on a MOB's aggro list. This is done purposefully so that this Character is the target of Rampage attacks, rather than a healer or caster and such. The best way to become Rampage Tank is to temporarily take aggro away from the Main Tank.

However, it can also mean caster classes that can cast spell attacks and / or send in pets from a distance.

RANGER - (RNG, Pathfinder, Outrider, Warder, Forest Stalker, Plainswalker, Huntmaster, Hunt Master) This is a Player Class. Rangers are a Druid / Warrior hybrid that wear chain armor, who are at their best DPS with ranged (bow and arrow) attacks, even though they can melee and duel wield weapons. They also can cast spells to include heals, buffs, snare and attacks (DoT's and DD's). Rangers can only be of the Drakkin, Half Elf, Halfling, Human and Wood Elf races. Rangers are also the best Tracker class there is.

Rank II's are normally dropped in group content and may, or may not, involve a trade-in process (with a certain NPC).

RANK III - (RK III, RK3, 'R 3,' 'R K 3') - This is a reference to Spells, Songs & Disciplines. After Level 70, most Spells, Songs & Disciplines came with three (3) progressive Levels. The base spell (Rank I, so to speak) is usually Vendor sold. In some cases it is said the Deity you follow can give you boosts in certain areas (such as STR, DEX, etc.). The Reuse (or 'Refresh') timer is easily seen in game (see image, below). However, this is not the case for Spells. With spells, the only way to see the timer is to cast the spell and then hover your cursor over the greyed out spell gem, which will pop up a timer countdown for you to see (see image, below). So, if you are a Dark Elf Shadowknight, you are trying to chat and adventure as a Dark Elf Shadowknight would. However, most Players, even Role Players, rarely ever try to be 'In Character.' Roleplay servers are intended to be servers where all Players act and behave as if they are, in fact, their Character. If this happens just after you Leveled or looted a new item of gear or whatever, upon return you will no longer have the new level or new item of gear, due the roll back. Sometimes, Dev's can do this on purpose, to either penalize Players (such as if they used an exploit to acquire things they should not have acquired, for example) or to help Players (such as when a glitch causes a Players items to poof into limbo, and the roll back will give them back).

There is a lot of this in EverQuest. In reality, Semantics is actually about the meaning of words, and if words are being used incorrectly, then a 'semantic change' comes into play. A semantic change involves a change in the meaning, or evolution of a word, which can be dramatically different from the original word.

It is possible to transfer Characters from one server to another (with certain conditions and by expending Marketplace funds). See here for Server details.

SERVER CHANNEL

SERVER MERGE - A server merge is when one EverQuest server is merged into another. When that happens, the 'old' merged server, that was merged into the other 'parent' server, ceases to exist. When servers are merged, a lot goes on. Basically, all characters, guilds, guild housing zones, housing, guild halls and so forth is merged over to the 'parent' server. However, a Character's name may get changed. If there is a Character coming over from the 'old' server, when there is all ready a Character by the same name on the 'parent' server, one of those Characters will have an 'X' added to the end of their name. Thus, 'Bonzz' would become 'Bonzzx,' for example. The rule for which Character gets renamed is: (1) The Character that has actually logged in during the most recent 60-Days; (2) If that applies to both same-name Characters, then the Character with the most Played Time (in minutes) will retain their name. The Character that has an 'X' added to their name will be 'flagged' for a free name change, using the /changename command.

Some Buff's will overwrite / take precedence over other Buffs, thus, it is said they "do not stack." When it comes to items, many items will take up an inventory slot all by themselves. Others can share an inventory slot ("stack") with multiples of the same item. The most any stackable items can stack to is 1,000 (for most tradeskill items). Example, there is a "Static" version of Freeport, but a Mission, Expedition, Heroic Adventure or Raid may "spin up" an instanced (temporary) version of Freeport where the Mission, Expedition, Heroic Adventure or Raid takes place. There are also zones, like with the Lost Dungeons of Norrath, that have no Static version (they are all instanced).

STRAFE - (Strafing) While a military term, in EQ it means to move or run at an angle. Moving at an angle can help you move faster when snared. To "strafe" and move at an angle use your Control key (or you right mouse button) and two of your movement keys at the same time (forward and left, forward and right...). So strategizing is a huge and necessary part of EQ! It adds the fun / challenge of "figuring it out" to the game. However, be wary of stepping over the line from Strategy to Exploit.

However, recently, using a second capital letter and an accent mark (`), is now also allowed. Spaces, however, are still not allowed. You can change your Character's surname every seven (7) days. You can remove your Characters surname by simply using the /surname command by itself.

SUNRISE HILLS - This is reference to a unique zone. Sunrise Hills is an instanced zone, that hosts Player Houses and Guild Halls. All instances of this zone are use the exact same lay-out (map), but they can look different due to Player placed homes, halls and items. It is also a reference to suspending mercenaries (making them a]go away, until you need them again).

TABLE - This is a reference to a hidden function of EverQuest, particularly in reference to loot. MoB's have 'loot tables' that identify what items they can drop, how many items they can drop and the chance (percentage) they have to drop each different item. EverQuest came to 'recognize' Talk Like a Pirate Day as well. You cannot share tasks with other characters, though if two characters have tasks that require similar or identical things they can be completed at the same time." However, Players do not generally get so specific. There are Solo and Group (Shared) Tasks. The real difference between a 'Quest' and a 'Task,' is that the Task or Quest Window (see Quest Journal), where the goals of the Task / Mission, required in order to complete the Task / Mission, are revealed (see Task Step). You can only have 29 Tasks active at the same time.

TRIBUTE - Tribute is a reference to (4) types of 10-minute Buffs / Boosts that can be activated via the Tribute System, once you set it up and donate items to build up a pool of Tribute Points that are used to activate the Buffs / Boosts.

TRIPLE ATTACK - This offensive skill that allows a Player the chance to strike three (3) blows in sequence, instead of one (1) or two (2) blows.

TRIVIAL - This is primarily a tradeskill term, meaning that the skill needed to craft an item is 'trivial' (easy, not likely to fail). It is also a reference to tradeskill recipes as a whole, as each recipe has a designated 'trivial' skill level 'needed' to make it. If your skill is not at least equal to that trivial skill level, your chances of failing to make the items is escalated.

TRIVIAL LOOT CODE - This is a reference to EverQuest code that refers to loot settings related to Player Levels versus MoB Level. The code makes it so that certain loot items do NOT drop when the Player 'outclasses' the MoB to the extent that the MoB is a 'trivial' battle. This code does not apply to every zone and was first introduced in March 2001 when The Warrens zone was added to the game (and has since been revised as to how it works and / or what Loot it applies to).

TROLL - This is an NPC / MoB race. It is also a Player race. Traditionally, Trolls get Slam, a boost to Hit Point Regeneration, Infravision and a weakness (-20) to Fire Resist (but this may have changed over time). Troll is also a term for disruptive Players who 'troll' forums and chat channels.

TRUE BOX - This is a term that refers to a Server rule set. It means that a Player, even if they have multiple accounts, will only be able to play one account from one computer at a time. Thus, if you box, you will need multiple computers to play and box on such a server. Essentially, this forces Players who want to Box, to do so the hard way (no one-computer short cuts, etc.).

TURN IN - (Turn In Item, Hand-In, Hand In) - This is a reference to having to give items to an NPC as part of a Quest.

TUTORIAL - This is primarily a reference to the EverQuest Tutorial (aka Gloomingdeep). New Characters can opt to start in the Tutorial, or start in 'live' zones. The Tutorial involves a zone called Gloomingdeep (you can't get to this zone otherwise) that is chock full of areas and tasks that are designed to familiarize a player with the many aspects of EverQuest, obtain some gear and progress to about Level 10 (you can see a video of how the Tutorial starts, here). There was an old type of Tutorial with the Original EverQuest, but it was ran off-line and not associated (connected) with the actual live game. You can see what the old Tutorial was like, here. The old Tutorial was replaced by the new Tutorial, via patch (June 29, 2005).

Original EverQuest Tutorial

TWINK - A Twink is a player character that has been artificially enhanced, but way of power leveling, equipping it with high stat armor & weapons, money and other such things. This character finds life much easier from the improved attack / defense / money. A Twink is born with a silver spoon in their mouth, so to speak. They find it easier to kill MOB's and faster to level up than a character who starts from scratch. See also Heroic Character.

TWIST - (Twisting) This is a reference to a Bard's ability to play songs. More specifically, to play, or 'twist' multiple songs at the same time.

TWO HANDED SLASH - (Two-Handed Slashing, 2HS, Two Hand Slash) - See 2H Slash.

TY - Initialism for Thank You.

TYPE - This is primarily a reference to Augmentations, as all Augmentations have a Type, which is a number (Type 1, Type 5, Type 7, Type 8, etc.). This means they will only fit into Armor (Gear) Slots that accept their specific "Type." It can also refer to items that are the same (such as "Food") but have different durations (i.e. Meal vs. Hearty Meal). See Food or Drink. See also, Model.

TYVM - Initialism for Thank You Very Much.

TXT - This is a computer file extension. TXT (TEXT) files contain just that, typed text. Many EverQuest files are in the form of TXT files, to include logs, map files, output files and others.

U

UBAH - (Uber) Despite this word having real world definitions (i.e. Flower), it is actually a play on the pronunciation of the word "Uber," which basically means supreme, outstanding or super. More often than not, this term is used with humorous sarcasm, in reference old school items that were once in great demand, but are now essentially of no value at all. 'That Rusty Sword is so ubah!'

UF - An initialism for Underfoot, the 16th expansion of EverQuest.

UI - See User Interface.

ULTRA RARE - See Chase Loot.

ULTRAVISION - This is a magical effect / spell that improves your night vision (ability to see in the dark).

ULTRON'S ULTIMATE UNATTUNER - Attunable items, that have been 'Attuned' and thus made No Trade, can individually be combined inside Ultron's Ultimate Unattuner (sold by Loyalty Vendors, and the Overseer vendor... a mysterious presence), to make them Attunable and Tradable again. The X can only be used one and is consumed in the process.

UNATTENDED GAME PLAY - This is a reference to doing things in EverQuest, when you are not at least in the general vicinity of your computer (it is against the rules, see Exploit and / or Cheat). Example, going to a zone / spot, pulling out a Merc, turning on Advanced Loot, taking your Pet off Hold and then going AFK and allowing your Character to kill and farm drops on it's own by way of automatic game mechanics. If you are at the keyboard and monitoring this process, it is allowed. Dev's (Piestro) have, however, said that swimming into a corner underwater, with auto-run on, to skill up Swimming, is OK.

UNATTUNE - See Attunable and / or Ultron's Ultimate Unattuner (above).

UNINTENDED GAME PLAY - This is a reference to doing things in EverQuest, that were not intended to be possible (it is against the rules, see Exploit and / or Cheat). Sometimes Patches, new content and so forth can add situations, abilities, spells and other tings in the game, that Players can use to their advantage, but was not intended. While Players may consider it a strategy, it is more of an exploit.

UNGOD - This is a reference to the NPC Zebuxoruk, also known as the 'Ungod.'

UNDEAD - This is a reference to MoB's that are 'tagged' as undead, such as Vampires, Skeletons, Ghosts, Ghouls, Mummies and others.

UNDER THE WORLD - This is reference to a a glitch that sometimes happens, where a Character can actually get stuck out of the boundaries of a zone / game play (literally under the ground, inside a wall, or behind some invisible zone barrier...). This has been known to happen with MOB's that summon (they summon you to them and you end up in a wall or something that they were standing at). There is at least one zone I know of, where if you are shrunk, levitated and trying to skirt around MOB's high up on a wall, you can actually slip through the zone barrier and get stuck along the edge of the zone (you can move back and forth along the edge and nothing more). In most cases, this can be remedied by the Player using a command like /rewind, or teleporting out.

UNDERWATER ZONE - A reference to any zone that is fully or primarily underwater, such as the Reef of Coirnav.

UNATTENDED GAME PLAY - See Exploit. An in-game 'by-pass' (exploit) that was not intended, when added to the game. Players, if they discover such things, should report them, not take advantage of them. Taking advantage of them can result in punitive action (i.e. roll backs, suspensions, bans...).

UNDER THE WORLD - This is a term used by Players to describe a glitch where they end up below ground level of a zone. When this happens, looking up one can see the grass and trees and whatever is actually on the surface of the zone. Players may, or may not, be able to move. In order to resolve this bug, Players will need a mage to Call of the Hero them, use the /rewind command and / or camp and come back.

UNDERFOOT - (UF) - Underfoot was the 16th expansion, released in December 2009 (with Convorteum added in March 2010). Underfoot introduced the Extended Target Window and Achievements.

UNITY - While there is a Mission called 'Unity,' this is primarily a reference to the Shaman buff, that, with one cast, will provide as many as four (4) different buffs to players (depending on other buffs they have or what they may have blocked).

UNLOCK - (Unlocked) - This is a reference to gaining access to something in game. Example, certain items on a specialty vendor, which can be hidden and not available to you, until you 'unlock' them by completing certain flagging and / or achievements. Similarly, it can also be a reference to gaining access to certain zones and / or gaining the ability to request certain raids or missions.

UNMODIFIED - See Modified.

UP TIME - This is a reference to how long a zone or a server has been active, with no down time. It is also an in-game command (/up), that allows you to see this information.

UP VOTE - This is an alternate term for 'liking' a post in the EverQuest Forums, particularly the 'Bug' Forums, where Players can 'like' the first post in a thread, to 'up vote' it. The purpose of this is to make the Dev's 'more aware' that multiple Players see the the 'bug' as an issue, and that they (the Dev's) should give it a look.

UPDATE - See Patch.

URL - This is a real world term ("Uniform Resource Locator") referring to web sites, as in their internet address (i.e. www.bonzz.com). EQ is a virtual game and not only does EQ have a web site, but there are many other sites about EQ as well, like this one. Players can open their browser to a web site, directly from EverQuest using the /ww command (i.e. /ww bonzz.com).

USER - Alternate term for a Player. You, the Player, are a User.

USER INTERFACE - (UI) This is, essentially, your EverQuest Window... the 'interface' presented to you, the 'user' in order to play the game, not to be confused with 'Layout' (see Layout). This is what your EverQuest Window looks like. EverQuest comes with a default UI (look), obviously, but you can use special UI's not created or provided by EverQuest. Specialized UI's are Player created and they modify how existing windows look (color, size, etc.) and / or what they actually show.

USER NAME - (Account Name) - Just what it means in the real world. Accessing EverQuest and your Daybreak account requires your User Name and Password. Never ever give this out or use it openly / publicly! If you do, you seriously risk fraud / hacking! Don't do it!

USURP - This means taking over leadership of a Guild, using the command /usurp, that was added to the game in May 2020. Certain conditions apply, to include the current Guild Leader having been inactive for at least 1 year, or there is no actual Guild Leader. The Character using this command must also be in the Guild (obviously) and hold the rank of Senior Officer. If successful, the Character will be made Leader of the Guild.

UTILITY PROGRAM - External, non-EQ, non-Daybreak Programs that are used to assist you while Playing EverQuest are often referred to as Utility Programs. Example, many Players use a voice Chat Program so they can actually talk to each other, rather than type. Some use a program for DPS / Heal 'parses.' And so on. Some Programs are taboo and are 100% considered Cheating (See Cheat), so be wary about using Programs that allow you to do things you could not otherwise do on your own.

UZAH - In EverQuest, this is the word used for the Letter U.

This term is normally used with a negative connotation, even though such things help keep EQ afloat and Players are not required to buy them.

VENDOR - This is a term for an NPC that you can interact with to buy & sells items. Such Vendors are often specialized in what they sell / offer (i.e. items related to specific tradeskill, etc.). All Vendors will also retain and offer (for resale) items that are sold to them by Players. Vendors do have a limit on how many different items they can / will offer for sale (it's about 100, which includes their standard stock by default, and as many of the most recent items  and / or highest count items that they were sold and have room for).

VENDOR DIVING - Vendor Diving is a term derived from a real life term, Dumpster Diving. Basically it means going through discarded items (items sold to NPC Vendors in this situation) looking for items that may yet have value (tradeskill items, tribute items, gear, etc.) and then buying them back off the Vendor, if they do.

However, after 14 years worth of these AA's, they stopped granting these special AA's and entitled them to everyone.

These AA's can be activated with a Command (/alt act 0000, with the number being the one you can find in the AA Description), or by creating a Hot Button.

You can find Veteran AA's in the 'Special' Tab of you AA Window.

However, this is generally recognized as not a good thing to do, because other sounds can also activate your Mic, such as a TV, Radio, Music, other people nearby talking and so on. As a result, other Players will hear same and be annoyed by it. So, "don't be that guy" and use Push to Talk instead.

VOICE CHAT - This refers to talking, rather than typing, when Playing EverQuest, using a common application that allows Players to talk to each other.

VOICE MACRO - (EQ Button -> Actions -> Voice Macro) (vtell, vraid, vgroup, vplay) - This is a feature of EverQuest, where you can 'play' a sound in the voice of your character (male or female, and by race). You can use the Voice Macro Window to do this by highlighting any one (1) of the twelve (12) options (See #1 in image to right), and then clicking any of the button below there (see #2 in image to the right) to send the sound to your Group, your Raid, to start a tell to someone specific or just to hear it ('Test' button).

You can also uses commands to do the same things, follow by a two-digit number (01 to 12) of the sound you want to use.
