I often wonder if there were no cheat sites -- like this one -- how we would ever figure out many or most of the quests!
The in-game information we are given is often very lacking (from the NPC's) -- as they don't often tell you specifically what they want, where to find what you seek or what other NPC to seek out -- or even where!
I have "shortcut" many quests on this site to save you time, trouble and even coin. The quests are detailed in a logical and "shortcut" manner. They do not necessarily follow the quest as it was originally created, intended, laid out or planned by Sony.
However -- if you enjoy doing the quest in full -- feel free to do so.
.
There are multiple types of "quests." The old style quests are the straight up type... research, figure out and accomplish. The newer ones are called tasks and missions. You actually get a window that reveals one or more task steps as you progress into the task/mission.
.
BIG NOTE: Everquest does get changed, upgraded, modified, fixed, improved, nerfed, bugged and otherwise altered with game features, mechanics and so forth.
For that reason -- the Quests and information that I provide may also be slightly different and/or have different requirements than when I accomplished or researched them.
Example -- it is clear that Paladin's used to have to sneak their way into Neriak to get the Book of Scale. Now they can get it in North Qeynos. The Keeper of the Tombs in The Hole was moved from it's original location and the zone was even renamed to The Ruins of Old Paineel... and that is just two (2) of many and constant changes.
.
When doing these quests using my notes -- you may need a map (printed or in-game map) of the involved zones.
This is because I may sometimes cite a location, give generic directions, refer to a spot on the map or just assume you can find your way around.
.
Quests are an integral, important and essential part of Everquest.
After all -- it is what the name of the game suggests..... Ever.... Quest!
I am often amazed at those who would rather group and participate in non-stop mindless fighting rather than to pursue a quest. Many would also rather just buy better items than to quest better items.
Those who do such, really miss out on many of the fun adventures, challenges and some the best items (which are no trade).
.
Quests result in three basic things nearly every time (once completed and also while in progress) -- namely, experience gain, coin/item reward and a faction loss/gain.
.
Experience is necessary to advance in this game.
You get "XP" from killing green, light blue, dark blue, white, yellow or red con MOB's -- or by way of quests (turning in items, completing tasks...).
.
Coin is necessary in order to feed and equip yourself better.
You get it by looting MOB's, buying/selling items, trade skills, as a gift from other players, player services/trades -- and by quests!
.
Faction is necessary in order to have the ability to walk into certain area's and gain the cooperation of certain NPC's.
This comes from quests and by killing certain MOB's (certain MOB's gain and/or loose you faction with certain political groups).
Bad faction can get you killed, while really good faction can get you better prices and other things.
.
Faction is especially important when doing quests, as many NPC's will not talk to you -- or reward you -- if your faction is not good enough. In short -- the NPC you need to speak to, in order to undertake and complete a quest, may not talk back to you. Even worse, they may attack you! Therefore, you can't complete the quest.
As an example -- I did the Soulfire quest all the way to the end. When I first handed in the items for the Soulfire I did not get the Soulfire! It failed because I had overlooked the faction issue and did not have high enough faction with the final NPC!
.
SOme quests also result in a fourth benefit... item rewards.
Items are necessary in order to make money, equip yourself, feed yourself and so forth.
They come from looting MOB's, finding them lying about, buying them, making them from other items, being given them or -- yes -- from quests. Items include everything from weapons, armor, spells, food, water and anything else you can carry/possess/wear.
.
Early on you should do the easy quests. They involve nothing more than killing certain MOB's, looting certain items off those MOB's and returning those items to certain NPC's for your reward (normally in the form of faction, coin and experience).
These basic quests will gain you more XP and coin over what you may have all ready gained from killing MOB's to start with -- so it is like a free bonus just for a little more trouble.
Take advantage of it! You level faster/easier and you make more coin!
.
Example -- my warrior made an easy and fast three levels in immediate succession, in Blackburrow!
He leveled in the zone and looted loads of teeth. He then went to Qeynos where he turned the teeth in at the Warrior Guild and he leveled again (just on the turn-ins)!
When turning in those teeth, he got some spheres in return. He then walked over to a nearby bar and turned those in and -- woot -- he leveled again!
He literally leveled twice from turn-ins.... alone!
Even better, turning in the spheres also gained him some stout to sell and/or work on alcohol tolerance with!.
Now, this is the only faction-quest I have ever seen that gave such great XP -- but hey -- it makes my point!
.
The easiest quests are normally found in a home town from a Guard Captain or Class Guild Leader.
Simply hail them and say back to them the [bracketed text]. If that doesn't work, rephrase your response with the bracketed text in your response. It may take several tries to figure this out. Often, just saying the text is good enough. Sometimes you just need to answer a question (re: just say "Yes" or "I will help"). Sometimes you may have to slightly reword the text (respond first person as opposed to third person as noted in the text), in the form of a question.
They will generally tell you what they want. They may tell you to bring them back scalps or skins off of a certain MOB (usually they want four -- do NOT stack them when turning them in). These MOB's are normally right outside the city walls or just inside the next zone.
.
As you progress -- such simple quests become quickly obsolete. This is because the MOB's you need to kill no longer gain you XP; the coin you gain is no longer comparable to what you get with higher level MOB's; and the Faction gain/loss has maxed out (plus or minus).
At this point you should consider questing for better items. Such quests are normally (initially) found in your Class (character type) Guild Hall.
.
After that -- you may start questing for "sought after" items.
At this point -- you will probably need some level of help to complete such quests -- for they will often require you to travel to far away and/or dangerous places and/or to kill more dangerous MOB's.
These quests will always be around for you to do, at all levels, in all zones.
.
The biggest quest of all, however -- is what people call an Epic.
The Epic is specific to your class and will be a long hard road requiring lots of help. You should start working on your Epic at any time. The lesser steps can often be accomplished at lower levels.
The Paladin epic is clearly the hardest epic in the game, in my opinion. Many say it is not worth the effort and you can get better weapons than your epic. While there are better weapons, attaining your epic is a true feat.
With a Paladin -- it is best to complete certain parts of your Epic 1.0 quest by Level 52. This is because at Level 53 you will not be allowed to participate in a raid on certain MOB's that you need to kill -- such as Lord Nagafen and Lady Vox. What happens is that you are "cast out" of the room (actually, you are cast out of the zone, entirely).
This is not to say you will be out of luck if you hit Level 53 -- you will just have to kill higher level and more dangerous MOB's for what you need. Even worse, they are on multi-day spawn timers and are often killed immediately by whoever happens to be there (making them very hard to find up).
.
In closing I will say this.... if you don't become a little obsessed with quests, you cannot progress in the game, you cannot get some of the best armor, equipment, weapons, augmentations, etc., and you most definitely will loose interest in the game from mindless killing of MOB's... as that makes EQ a one-tier boring game when it is so, so very much more.
