ZONES OF FAYDWER

I don't believe Faydwer was part of the original game. I think it was just slowly "added" later on. It has seem some modifications and additions since it's inception. Faydwer is only about 14 zones large (to include cities). In fact -- one city (Kelethin) is part of a larger zone and is not a zone unto itself, like all the other cities in EQ. Faydwer is where the Gnome, Orc, High Elf, Wood Elf and Dwarf races find home cities. Some of the Lost Dungeons of Norrath (September 2003) zones are on Antonica.

THE AK'ANON

AKA: Akanon; Ak

My Pronunciation: Ack - aye - non; Ack - uh - non

Bonzz's Grade: Boring. Fighting here can ruin faction, but it is a 33% XP Bonus.

This is the home to gnomes. It is primarily an underground cavern with the focal point being a lake, around which the city is based. The coolest thing I saw here -- for the first time -- were the guides. You could say to a Clockwork Guide a character name (like "Gnome Grocer) or location title (like a named bar) and the Guide will move off. If you follow, it will take you right to the NPC or location. Other zones have such characters -- but this is the first place I saw it and figured out the function. There is also a "zoo" here with various MOB's inside it.

This zone connects only to the Steamfont Mountains.

There is little of interest for a Paladin here and larger races may have difficulty getting about in tunnels and doors made for the small Gnomes. NPC's here carry the normal range of levels from sub-Level 10 to near or over Level 60.

BUTCHERBLOCK MOUNTAINS

AKA: BB; Butcher

Bonzz's Grade: Good.

This zone connects to Dagnor's Cauldron, South Kaladim and Greater Faydark. It also has some Boat Docks where you can catch Boar rides to the Ocean of Tears (to Firiona Vie and East Freeport).

This zone is marked by paths that wind through grassy-forested mountainous terrain. One of the more interesting features are the stone ruins of a giant Chessboard. There is a Druid Port here.

The zone is populated by lower level MOB's and is mostly a newbie zone. However, MOB's range from Level 1 to Level 20, with NPC's going on up to at/near Level 60. The MOB's include skeletons, bats, basilisks, scarabs, goblins and Greenbloods (ogres). There are a number of merchants throughout the zone as well.

One interesting/fun character is an NPC just inside the zone from the docks. He will ask you for items (he is a beggar). If you give him anything -- he will follow you and fight with you, like a pet! He is low level, however -- so he is not much help, plus he is slow and can get lost.

SHOPPING LIST: A Pendant, Adventurer's Stone, Blade of Nobility.

CASTLE MISTMOORE

AKA: Mistmoore; Mistmoor; Mist; MM; Mistmoore Castle

My Pronunciation: Mist - moor (rhymes with Poor)

Revamped Jan 2005

Bonzz's Grade: Fun, with a 20% XP Bonus.

This zone is populated by Dark Elves -- as it is is their Castle/Town. The deeper you go in, the harder it gets -- with MOB's/NPC's ranging from Level 20 to over Level 50. Paladin's will need to come here for some quest/epic items. This zone connects only to Lesser Faydark.

Other than various Dark Elves, there are also undead, Gargoyles, a friendly named Shadowed Man, some Wolves and a named Troll.

Loot here can be pretty good in both coin and items. I got a nice shield here and made some decent coin on other items (armor, gems, fine steel, gargoyle eyes...).

CRUSHBONE

AKA: Camp Crushbone; CB; Crush.

Bonzz's Grade: Good if you are Level 7-ish to 18-ish -- and it has a 114% XP Bonus!

This is an Orc city. It is a relatively small zone  centered around the Castle/Fort. This zone connects only to Greater Faydark. The zone is entirely populated by Orcs (Level 8 to 25-ish) -- but for a few prisoner/slave characters. Some reasonable loot and XP if you are the right level.

A desirable item here are the Crusbone Belts -- which you can turn in for more XP, loot and faction.

DAGNORS CAULDRON

My Pronunciation: Dag - norz

Bonzz's Grade: Different, but boring.

This zone connects to the Butcherblock Mountains and is the only avenue to Kedge Keep and the Estate of Unrest.

MOB's here range from around Level 10 to about Level 35, with a few NPC's that may range much higher.

This zone is basically a large lake with an island in the center (merchant on top of island's peak).

Other than a Paladin needing to come here for a quest NPC and to get to Kedge Keep or the Estate of Unrest -- this zone is of no interest.

THE ESTATE OF UNREST

AKA: Unrest

Bonzz's Grade: Okay, but can be train hell. It does have a 73% XP Bonus.

This zone connects only to Dagnor's Cauldron.

This zone is populated, to a Paladin's delight, mostly undead creatures! The zone is not that large and centers around a multi-level Mansion, surrounded by a hedge maze. MOB's here range from about Level 10 to over Level 35. There are various skeletons, ghouls, zombies, beetles, and mummies. This is the first place I saw Werebats, Fungus, Jack O'Lanterns and Tentacle Terrors.

There are a lot of trains here as aggro is common. The danger lies in the fact that the tunnel out of the zone is a winding and long run, making escape from trains less likely. Therefore, it is best NOT to camp near the zone tunnel, but rather, around the back or to the side.

Paladin's will have to come here for quest/epic reasons. There is also a shoulder item (Blood Stained Mantle) that drops here that Paladin's can wear and has decent stats for the mid-levels.

GREATER FAYDARK (KELETHIN)

AKA: GFay; Faydark; Often misspelled as Feydark; Kelethin

My Pronunciation: Fay - Dark

Bonzz's Grade: Newbie zone.

Having spent my low levels elsewhere, I found Greater Faydark boring MOB-wise. It is an interesting zone with MOB-types and the fact that Kelethin is a City within the zone (as opposed to a zone unto itself) that is set high up in the tree's on wooden platforms.

MOB's here (other than NPC's that can range on up to Level 60-plus) are anywhere from Level 1 to about Level 50. There are a lot of Orcs plus the normal bats, skeletons, wolves and treants. This is the first place I saw a Pixie and a Faerie.

There are some Spires here (to Nexus). The zone connects to Crushbone, Lesser Faydark, Butcherblock Mountains and Northern Felwithe.

KEDGE KEEP

AKA: KK; Kedge

Bonzz's Grade: Fun, different and dangerous with a 33% XP Bonus.

This zone connects only to Dagnor's Cauldron. I have seen one map that indicates there are Boat connections from here to the Ocean of Tears (Butcherblock Mountains) plus a zone to the Northern Desert of Ro and to Western Freeport. However -- I have only seen one map (Everquests' own Maps of Myrist)  with such references. It is clear that these references are blatant errors (the references are confused with the ones for Freeport).

This zone if fully underwater (another reason to suggest there is no boat here). The zone is not a flat zone, but rather a vertical zone. Connections can go up and down. Aggro can also come from below and above, rather than just from you line of sight.

MOB's here are fish of many kinds (Level 25 to 55-plus) to include Mermaids, Sharks, Fish, Piranha, Barracuda and named NPC's like Phinigel Autropos.

As a Paladin, you will have at least 1 quest that brings you to this very dangerous area. You must have some time of eternal breath item/buff, be a good swimmer and with a decent group.

LESSER FAYDARK

My Pronunciation: Fay - Dark

Bonzz's Grade: Indifferent.

This zone is a wooded, grassy and hilly zone. It connects to Greater Faydark, the Butcherblock Mountains and the Castle of Mistmoore zones. I saw my first horse MOB here, as well as a Unicorn (Equestrielle). MOB's here range from Level 1 to about Level 50. There are Faeries, Pixies, Fae Drakes (butterflies), beetles, skeletons, mummies, Gnomes, Dark Elves, Brownies and Barbarians.

When I came here originally -- I found MOB's were either too low or too high/tough to solo. The only time I have actually hunted here was for quest reasons, in killing the Faeries and the named Clockwork. Otherwise, the zone is of little or no interest to a Paladin.
